While accompanying my mother to Apotik Melawai, Depok, I came across this unique candy, Hopjes Kopi. These days, it's not so often to find such candy sold in a modern store, let alone at a supermarket or hypermart. Last time I checked, I can only find it in a unique small shop located at Kemang, Cemal-Cemil, specializing in selling retro delicacies.
A pack of this Hopjes is only Rp1.200,-, not bad for bringing back nostalgic childhood. As the name suggest, it's a coffee flavored candy which, I suspect, is made the old-fashioned way. I came to that conclusion because, after I tore away the package, it was quite an effort to take one candy out of the pack. It was, as if, the candies were glued one to another. It happens that the candies melt a little when the package is put in a room temperature. The taste is yummy, but too sweet. The coffee is too much absorbed in sugar or caramel, I don't know. In this country, there is no coffee candy that really taste like coffee.
With a classic package design and cheap price, this candy is quite a way of bringing back the old days of my childhood in 1980's. Interested, well, you don't have to go as far as Kemang because you can just drop by at Apotik Melawai Depok, not far from LIA Depok.
